Can You Colour Hair Extensions? Everything You Need to Know
Human hair extensions can be coloured — but the process is not identical to colouring natural hair. This guide covers what works, what does not, and how to approach colour on extensions safely.
What Works Well
Toning
Toning is the safest colour process. A toner deposits colour without lifting, so it does not open the cuticle aggressively. Ideal for removing brassiness or shifting a shade slightly.
Darkening
Going darker is always safer than going lighter. Depositing colour does not require lifting agents. Extensions can be darkened by one to three shades without significant risk.
Semi-Permanent Colour
Semi-permanent dyes without developer work well. They add tone and depth without chemical stress.
What Does Not Work Well
Bleaching or Lifting
Lightening extensions is the highest-risk process. Extensions have no scalp oil to protect them, so bleach can cause dryness and breakage quickly. Choosing the right shade at purchase is strongly preferred over lifting after the fact.
Multiple Processes
Repeated colour treatments shorten extension lifespan significantly.
How to Colour Extensions Safely
- Do a strand test first
- Use 10 vol maximum developer for permanent colour
- Deep condition immediately after
- Avoid heat styling for 48 hours after colouring
