Hair Extension Mistakes to Avoid
Most extension problems come from a small number of repeated mistakes. This guide covers the most common ones — and exactly how to fix each one.
Mistake 1: Wrong Shade Match
The most common reason extensions look fake is a shade that does not match. Match your mid-lengths and ends, not your roots. When in doubt, go slightly lighter rather than darker — dark extensions against lighter ends create a hard line that is impossible to hide. Use the Find My Match quiz to get a personalised shade recommendation.
Mistake 2: Placing Wefts Too High
Clips placed near the hairline or crown are visible when the hair moves. Keep all wefts at least 4 cm below the crown and well away from the front hairline.
Mistake 3: Sleeping in Clip-Ins
Clip-in extensions are daywear only. Sleeping in them causes matting at the weft root that is very difficult to remove. Remove before bed every night. If you want extensions you can sleep in, consider tape-in extensions.
Mistake 4: Overwashing
Extensions have no scalp oil, so they do not need frequent washing. Washing too often strips moisture and shortens lifespan significantly. Wash every 10–15 wears maximum.
Mistake 5: No Heat Protection
Extensions cannot repair heat damage the way natural hair can — they have no living root replenishing moisture. Always use heat protectant before straightening, curling, or blow-drying.
Mistake 6: Storing Balled Up
Storing extensions balled up or coiled causes tangling and matting. Lay flat or hang on a satin hanger.
