How to Choose the Right Hair Extension Length
Length is the most visible decision you make with extensions. Too short and you miss the look you wanted. Too long and the extensions feel heavy and unnatural for your frame.
Measuring What You Have
Start by measuring your natural hair from root to tip. Extension length is added on top of — not instead of — your natural hair. A 20-inch extension on someone with 12-inch natural hair will reach differently than the same extension on someone with 6-inch natural hair.
Common Lengths and What They Give You
14–16 Inches
Adds body and fullness without dramatic length. Sits around collarbone on most people. Good for fine hair that needs volume rather than length.
18–20 Inches
The most popular range. Reaches mid-back on average height. Versatile — works for everyday wear and styled looks.
22–24 Inches
Reaches low back or waist. Maximum length looks. Works best when your natural hair is already past the shoulder, otherwise the join point is visible.
Your Height Matters
Extension lengths are measured from root to tip on a flat surface, not against your body. A 20-inch extension falls higher on a 5'8" person than on a 5'2" person. When in doubt, go one length longer than your target — you can always trim.
The Best Way to Decide
Use a tape measure against your own body. Start at the crown and mark where 14, 18, and 22 inches fall. This shows you exactly where each length lands before you buy.
