How to Remove Hair Extensions Safely (Step-by-Step)
Incorrect removal is one of the most common causes of extension-related damage. This guide covers the right technique for each method.
Removing Clip-In Extensions
The Right Order
Always remove clip-ins from front to back. Removing front clips first means the weft falls forward with gravity rather than dragging backward through the nape.
Step by Step
- Start with the highest weft at the front
- Press the clip release with thumb and index finger simultaneously
- Slide the clip open — do not pull while the clip is still closed
- Lay each weft flat as you remove it
- Work section by section downward and backward
- Nape weft comes out last
After Removal
Detangle each weft from ends upward immediately after removal while the hair is still in its worn state.
Removing Tape-In Extensions
Tape-in removal should be done by a professional. The adhesive bonds are dissolved with bond remover solution and the wefts slide free. Pulling without dissolving the adhesive causes breakage.
