How to Style Hair Extensions: Curls, Waves, and Straight

Extensions open up styling options your natural hair may not allow — but they need a slightly different approach than your own hair to stay looking good and last longer.

Before You Style: Always Apply Heat Protectant

Extensions can't repair themselves the way natural hair can — there's no scalp to produce oils and no new growth to replace damaged ends. Heat protectant is non-negotiable before any thermal styling.

Curling Extensions

Best Tool

A 25–32mm barrel at 160–180°C. Extensions curl faster than natural hair because they're not connected to a scalp that draws heat away.

Technique

Curl small sections at a time. Wrap the section around the barrel away from the face and hold for 8–10 seconds. Release and allow to cool in your hand before letting go — this sets the curl and makes it last longer.

Blending

Curl your natural hair first, then the extensions. Blend by running your fingers through both together once cool.

Creating Waves

Use a flat iron twisted 90 degrees as you move down the section. Alternate the direction of each twist (toward face, away from face) for a natural, unstructured wave. A wide-barrel wand also works well for a beachy texture.

Straightening

Use a medium-tension pass with a flat iron — one slow pass is better than multiple fast passes. Keep the temperature at 180°C maximum. Extensions straighten faster than natural hair, so high heat is unnecessary and damages the cuticle.

Finishing

A light touch of serum or hair oil on the mid-lengths and ends adds shine and tames any frizz without weighing down the style. Avoid roots on clip-ins or tape-in attachment points.
