How to Wash and Store Hair Extensions
The two habits that determine how long your extensions last are how you wash them and how you store them. A set washed correctly and stored properly will outlast a set that costs twice as much but is handled carelessly. This guide covers both.
How Often to Wash Extensions
Clip-in extensions do not need to be washed as often as your natural hair because they are not attached to a scalp producing oil. Wash every 10–15 wears, or when you notice product buildup or a change in texture.
How to Wash Clip-In Extensions
- Remove all clips and lay the weft flat in a basin of lukewarm water
- Add a small amount of sulphate-free shampoo and work it through gently — always moving downward from root to tip, never in a circular motion
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water
- Apply a generous amount of conditioner from mid-length to ends and leave for 5 minutes
- Rinse, then gently squeeze out excess water — do not wring or twist
- Lay flat on a clean towel to air dry
How to Store Extensions
The single most impactful storage habit is keeping the wefts straight rather than coiled or folded. A satin hanger designed for extensions is ideal. If you do not have one, lay the wefts flat in a box with tissue paper between each layer.
- Never store in a plastic bag — moisture gets trapped and causes matting
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Detangle before storing, not only before wearing
