What Is Remy Hair? Everything You Need to Know

"Remy hair" appears on nearly every hair extension product listing, but most buyers don't fully understand what it means — or why it matters for quality and longevity.

The Definition

Remy hair is human hair collected so that all strands run in the same direction — roots toward the scalp end, tips toward the ends. This preserves the natural cuticle alignment.

Why Cuticle Direction Matters

Hair has tiny scales called cuticles that run from root to tip. When all cuticles face the same direction, the strands glide past each other smoothly. When cuticles face different directions — as in non-Remy hair — they catch on each other and tangle constantly.

Remy vs Non-Remy

Non-Remy hair is collected in bulk (from hairbrushes, salon floors, or mixed sources) with no regard for cuticle direction. To stop this hair from tangling, manufacturers strip the cuticle layer with acid and coat it in silicone. The silicone washes off within a few weeks, after which the hair tangles, mats, and becomes unusable.

This is why cheap extensions feel silky in-store and become unmanageable within a month.

Double-Drawn vs Single-Drawn

Remy hair also comes in single-drawn (natural variation in strand thickness from root to tip) and double-drawn (all strands cut to the same length, giving a fuller, more uniform look). Double-drawn costs more but provides maximum volume.

How to Verify Remy Hair

Genuine Remy hair won't tangle when you run your fingers from root to tip versus tip to root — you'll feel slight resistance in one direction (the cuticle) and smoothness in the other. Silicone-coated hair feels equally smooth in both directions.

All Velvera extensions use 100% Remy human hair, double-drawn for maximum thickness.
