Hair Extensions for Grey Hair: How to Match Silver and Salt-and-Pepper

Hair Extensions for Grey Hair: How to Match Silver and Salt-and-Pepper

Quick answer: Yes, extensions work on grey hair — but matching is harder than it is for brown or blonde, because grey is never one flat colour. It is a mix of white, silver and still-pigmented strands, and the ratio changes from your temples to your nape. Match the dominant tone at the back of your head, not the brightest strands at the front — a little visible variation helps the blend rather than hurting it.

Grey is one of the least-served shades in extensions: manufacturers make a handful of grey tones and dozens of browns. Options are narrower and a mismatch shows more, because silver reflects light differently from pigmented hair. It just means the buying decision needs more than "pick the closest swatch."

Why Grey Hair Is Harder to Match

Grey is a ratio, not a colour

Grey hair is usually a mixture: some strands have lost their pigment and are white, the rest still hold their original colour, and what you see is the two blended at a distance. So holding one swatch against one section tells you almost nothing. Step back a metre and judge the overall tone in a mirror — that is what the extension has to match.

The ratio changes across your head

Most people grey at the temples and parting first and keep more pigment at the back and underneath. Match a set to the hair framing your face and it will look too light everywhere the extensions actually sit, because clip-ins and halos live in the mid and back sections. Match to the back of your head — the most common mistake on this shade is doing the opposite.

Texture changes too

Grey strands are often coarser, drier and wirier than the hair they replaced, while extensions tend to hang smoother. If your own hair has real texture, a sleek silver set can read as a separate layer sitting on top of it. A light wave through both, or a curly-textured set instead of a straight one, fixes that faster than any shade adjustment.

Three Situations, Three Approaches

If you are mostly silver or white

The easiest case. A dedicated silver or ash-grey set will match closely, and because your hair is uniformly light, small tonal differences disappear. Choose a cool silver over a warm one — naturally white hair usually reads cool, and a warm grey piece looks yellowish beside it.

If you are salt-and-pepper

The hard one, and worth being blunt about: a roughly 50/50 mix of dark and white strands has no single matching shade, because what you're reproducing is a mixture. Two things work: pick a mid-grey that splits the difference rather than a bright silver, and clip the wefts lower and further back than usual so the piece sits under your own hair and your natural mix falls over the top. The logic is the same one in our guide to matching extensions to highlighted hair: multi-tonal hair is matched by layering, not by finding one perfect swatch.

If you are growing out a dye job

Transitioning from coloured hair to natural grey leaves a demarcation line, and extensions genuinely help — a set matched to your grown-out root colour, clipped below the line, makes the transition read as deliberate rather than neglected.

An Honest Note on Silver, Toning and Colour

Our grey shades are synthetic, and synthetic cannot be toned. If a silver synthetic piece looks warmer than you'd like, purple shampoo won't fix it the way it would on your own hair — toning products deposit pigment into a porous hair shaft, and synthetic fibre doesn't take colour that way. What you buy is what you keep, so choose carefully at purchase.

Our human-hair option doesn't currently come in grey. The Halo™ is 100% Remy human hair, but its lightest shade is Platinum Blonde — no silver or ash-grey in the range right now. To get human hair in silver you'd buy the lightest shade and have a colourist tone it — an extra cost and an extra appointment, worth weighing against a synthetic set that simply arrives in the right colour. Our guide on colouring hair extensions covers what each material allows, and human hair vs synthetic covers the wider trade-off.

Keeping Silver Extensions Looking Silver

Silver and white fibre shows everything — product residue, hard-water minerals, smoke — because there's no pigment to hide behind. Wash with a clear, sulphate-free shampoo in cool water, rinse thoroughly, air dry flat, and store flat and out of sunlight. Keep heat low: 300°F is the ceiling on our synthetic sets, and overheating light synthetic fibre can change its tone permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you wear hair extensions with grey hair?

Yes. Watch two things: shade — match to the back of your head, where the extensions sit, not to your temples — and texture, since grey hair is often coarser than the fibre going into it. If your hair has thinned as well as greyed, a halo puts less tension on the roots than a full clip-in set.

How do you match extensions to salt-and-pepper hair?

Don't look for one exact shade; there isn't one. Pick a mid-grey sitting between your dark and light strands rather than a bright silver, and clip the wefts lower and further back so your own mixed hair falls over the top. From a metre away in daylight, that layered approach reads far more naturally.

Can you dye hair extensions grey or silver?

Human hair extensions can be toned toward silver by a colourist, though lifting them to a light enough base first is where the damage risk sits — a job for a professional, not a home kit. Synthetic can't be dyed at all: the fibre isn't porous, so colour sits on the surface and rubs off. If you want silver synthetic, buy it in silver.

If your hair has become noticeably thinner, more fragile or is shedding more than usual, speak to a stylist or a doctor before wearing clip-in extensions regularly — hair texture changes with age, and weight that was comfortable ten years ago may not be now.
