How to Apply Clip-In Hair Extensions: Step-by-Step Guide

Clip-in hair extensions are the most beginner-friendly way to add length and volume instantly. With the right technique, the entire process takes under ten minutes and leaves no visible trace. This guide covers the complete application from start to finish.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Your clip-in extension set
  • A tail comb or rat-tail comb for sectioning
  • A mirror (a second mirror for the back helps)
  • Optional: light-hold hairspray for grip

Step 1: Prep Your Natural Hair

Start with clean, dry hair. Extensions grip better on hair that is not freshly washed with a slippery conditioner. If your hair is very smooth, a light pass with a texturising spray on each section before clipping adds grip without damage.

Step 2: Create the First Section

Using your tail comb, draw a clean horizontal parting across the back of your head at the nape — roughly level with your ears. Clip all the hair above this line out of the way. This bottom section is where your first weft goes.

Step 3: Attach the First Weft

Take your widest weft (usually the largest piece in the set) and open all the clips. Centre the weft on the parting, then press each clip closed firmly from the centre outward. Tug gently to confirm each clip is locked.

Step 4: Work Upward in Sections

Release the next layer of hair, create another horizontal parting about 4–5 cm above the first, clip the hair above it up, and attach the next weft. Use medium-sized wefts for the mid-sections. Continue upward, using smaller wefts near the crown.

Step 5: Blend the Ends

Release all your natural hair over the extensions. Run your fingers through to blend, then style as normal. A light curl or wave through the ends is the fastest way to blend any visible line between your natural hair and the extension.

How to Make Extensions Look Natural

  • Always match your shade to your mid-lengths, not your roots
  • Place wefts at least 3 cm below the hairline — never at the very top
  • Blend with a light wave or curl rather than leaving ends pin-straight
